Fly Fishing Event

The Dallas Fly Fishers is sponsoring a Fly Fishing Event on Saturday February 11, 2012 at the Raptor Center in Lucas, Texas. The Dallas Fly Fishers is inviting troops with interested Boy Scouts that want to learn the basics of fly fishing required to obtain the fly fishing merit badge.

The Raptor Center is located in Lucas, Texas at Brockdale Park on the shores or Lake Lavon. This is a gated park with large spaces for camping and a 1 acre pond that is stocked with cat fish, sunfish and Bass. As many as 120 scouts have camped out at the park on weekends. The park has pavilions, toilet facilities, city water and large parking spaces. Here are the details for the Fly Fishing Event.

  1. 8 am to 8:45 am 9 arrive at the Raptor Center
  2. 9 am to 12:00 Fly Fishing Basic Instruction
  3. 12:00 to 1:00 Collective Lunch with Troop Participation
  4. 1:00 to 5:00 Fly Tying and Casting and Fly Fishing

There is flexibility in this event depending on the interest that is obtained. Here are some possibilities for the Troops.

  1. Troops can arrange to camp out at the Raptor Center over the weekend by contacting Eric Neupert at the Raptor Center at 469-964-9696. The web site for the Raptor Center is http://www.bpraptorcenter.org where you can find details on the location with pictures.
  2. The Dallas Fly Fishers is willing to continue the program into Sunday if there is interest.
  3. The Raptor Center relies on service help from Scouts, the Dallas Fly Fishers, other clubs, and the public to support their mission. Please see details on their web site. This is an excellent location for scouts to work on other merit badges and to do Eagle Scout Projects.
